About two weeks ago, I was blessed to receive a job offer to work as a theology teacher at a prestigious Catholic high school within the Appalachian region. The past two weeks of preparing,

praying, and celebrating this move have brought me a few reflections. Like most 20-somethings, I spent a great deal of my time over the past few years in self-doubt, in reorienting to an adult life which was at times far from ideal, in having wonderful adventures and dealing with terrible regrets. Most of us go through a desert like this. For me, this desert of the soul has also been a literal desert; I am somewhat welcoming the shift from living in the Phoenix valley area, with its 100+ degree weather every day, to the four seasons of West Virginia.
My academic hopes at this stage are to publish a paper exploring the theological ramifications of the philosopher of Thomistic Aesthetics, Piotr Jaroszyński. I, of course, continue my life-long love affair with Dante, and theological poetics in general. Professionally, I very much look forward to getting into the High School Classroom with budding Catholic minds, as we explore the Bible, Liturgy, and human sexuality.
Matthew David, co-founder and dear friend to me, as asked that I share a poem I wrote to commemorate Wendell’s baptism last year. I have reproduced it below.
Poem for Wendell
My dear godson,
cats will sit at twilight, to celebrate the dying day, somewhere your sisters eat lizard pies, and even ants can learn to play.
There is so much magic around you! In books and blocks and bricks and socks. Now, all the world will be yours soon, for work and wonder, to smile and pray.
But best of all, to say “thank you, I am glad that you are here,” because so many people love you, and love that you are near.
